Greater Cincinnati Chapter MOAA Charitable Fund

For many years the Greater Cincinnati MOAA Chapter has made donations to local non-profit organizations that support the uniformed services, including active, reserve, retirees and former service members.  Donations are normally presented to these organizations at our December membership meeting.

 

In the fall of 2025 the board began looking at setting up a chapter Donor Advised Fund (DAF) to manage these donations, with the idea of building more structure into our giving, and to grow the fund over time to make a bigger impact.  The board created an advisory committee of five board and chapter members, headed by CAPT Steve Drefahl.  With board approval, the committee created an Agreement with the Greater Cincinnati Foundation (GCF) to manage the fund for the chapter.  Also with board approval, the advisory committee developed Fund Operating Principles and Practices, a Timeline with key milestones for 2026, and a How to Donate guide.  We kicked of the Charitable Fund at the March 2026 membership meeting.

 

Key points of the chapter DAF are:

  1. Donations to the fund are tax deductible.  GCF will send confirmation of donations.

  2. Grants from the Fund can be made only to 501(c)(3) organizations that support the eight uniformed services in MOAA’s organization.

  3. Chapter members can recommend a grant to the committee. The advisory committee will review grant applications and submit applicable grant applications to the board for final approval.

  4. A donor has committed to a matching gift of dollar for dollar in 2026 up to $10,000.  In 2027 and 2028, the donor will match donations of up to $5000 each year.  So, by December, 2028, we have the potential to raise $40,000 to support the uniformed services in the community.

  5. The fund is designed to run in perpetuity.

 

As of June, 2026, all 24 board members and advisory committee members have donated to the fund.  Totals through June are:

Donations            $8780.68

Match               +$8780.68

Total                      $17561.36           

 

Thus we need to raise $1219.32 to reach our goal for 2026.  If we exceed the goal, the donor will increase the match.

How to Donate

Donations can be made by check, credit card, ACH, or publicly traded securities through the website of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation (GCF), which is the custodian for the Greater Cincinnati Chapter MOAA Charitable Fund. 

 

  • By Check – Make the check payable to “Greater Cincinnati Foundation.” In the memo section write “Greater Cincinnati Chapter MOAA Charitable Fund.” Mail the check to: Greater Cincinnati Foundation, 720 E. Pete Rose Way, Suite 120, Cincinnati, OH 45202. 
     

  • Credit Card/Online Donation – Credit card donations can be made via the Greater Cincinnati Foundation website at: https://gcfdn.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create/fund?funit_id=4584  This link takes you directly to the Greater Cincinnati Chapter MOAA Charitable Fund online donation page. 

    • Complete the requested information, review, then select the Continue button on the bottom of the page.

    • This will take you to the Payment Information page. Complete requested information and select Pay. 

    • A transaction confirmation page will indicate that the donation has been received, and you will receive a confirmation email, and donation receipt, from the GCF. 
       

  • Stock/Appreciated Securities

    • Please contact Elizabeth Cain, Controller, at giftinfo@gcfdn.org before starting a transfer. This notice will ensure the gift reaches the appropriate fund.

    • If the security is held at a brokerage firm, Greater Cincinnati Foundation maintains an account at Charles Schwab for the purpose of facilitating gifts of securities.

NOTE: It is the policy of Greater Cincinnati Foundation to sell all gifts of stock and add the net proceeds to the donor-designated fund. Stock transfers normally take several days to process. Please be aware that mutual fund transfers may take several weeks to complete.

IMPORTANT IRS INFORMATION:

  • Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) from an IRA cannot be made to a Donor Advised Fund.

  • Starting in 2026, non-itemizers can make above-the-line donations up to $1000 (single) and $2000 (married filing jointly) to charities.  However, these donations cannot be made to a Donor Advised Fund.

  • Check with your tax preparer/professional about these IRS rules.
